Ann-Cathrine Loo is a Swedish artist and illustrator who has been active in Sweden and England, working for clients from both Europe, the Carribean, and the Americas. She studied visual arts at Ålsta Folkhögskola in Sweden, where she focused on oil painting in the tradition of Dutch masters, and later also got a bachelor’s degree in Ethnology and History of Art from the Mid Sweden University.
Predominantly working in a realistic style, she favours traditional materials like pencil, watercolour, dry pastels, ink, and oil paints. A keen interest in history led to her moving to England, where she has been visiting castles and historical sites, as well as being active in Britain’s largest Viking age re-enactment society. She finds having costumes, weapons, and other historically accurate equipment at home is hugely beneficial for reference and inspiration.
In addition to a dozen fully illustrated picture books for young children, she has also produced numerous book covers and interior art for history textbooks, strategy and role-playing games, and novels.
